Machining of a frame in one milling centre

The previous process of manufacturing the Frame was extremely labor-intensive, with 25+ operations in various machine-tools. The piece having considerable dimensions, it was rather difficult to move it from one operation to another, and much time was being lost for multiple movements and setups.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROJECT

  • Sector: Oil-and-gas and earth-drilling machine production
  • Workpiece: Frame. It is a critical part of a drilling rig, and has an intricate shape and configuration, with a great many holes for high-accuracy installation and fixing. It is essentially a solid steel body.
  • Provider: Pumori-Engineering Invest

Project features

The new technological solution enables the complete machining to be done in one gantry-type milling centre. The Okuma machining centre (Japan) has additional special right-angle milling heads.

Project stages

  • Process design
  • Selection and supply of equipment
  • Selection and supply of cutting and clamping tools
  • Development of NC programs for the machine
  • Start-up and adjustment activities
  • Process implementation and test manufacture
  • Training of the customer's staff

Project result

The manufacture labor hours cut by two thirds. The productivity has grown ninefold, bringing about a considerable increase in output.
